Korra Alone is Important
I know this has probably been said a million times by now, but I’m going to add my two cents.
I feel like the writers of today’s episode must have either had experience with or consulted someone with mental illness, because the portrayal of Korra’s depression/PTSD was just so poignant. This is one of the only shows I’ve ever watched that treated mental illness with such seriousness and dignity. I’m sure it was validating and even comforting for any who has dealt with mental illness to see a wonderful character like Korra struggle. It would have been easy to write her as “fixed” now, but quick fixes are rare in real life.
I’m also grateful of the fact that the audience (and even Korra herself) was not coddled. While Katara’s advice was hopeful and positive, she said something important - that no one can really make Korra better but herself. Of course, that could have gone a more problematic route, where Korra is expected to just “will herself out of it”. Instead, I interpreted it as meaning that Korra’s journey to recovery was her own, and that it had to be by her terms and no one else’s.
You can have all the support in the world, but an important part of recovery is committing yourself to getting better for yourself. I can say from some experience that this is something people who struggle need to know.
I truly appreciate the fact that this show chose to address such a critical topic, and in a beautiful way. Bravo.
